We Keep What We Have by Giving It Away: Step 12 and the Call to Service

Updated: Jan 25

As we close out Recovery Month, I want to pause and reflect on Step 12, a step that has always struck a chord deeply with me: "Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

Step 12 is more than just a significant achievement—it’s a calling. It reminds us that recovery is not only about our own healing, but about reaching back to help the next person. Service is both a responsibility and a privilege. Studies show that service to others can reduce the risk of relapse by strengthening purpose and connection. When we share our story, offer encouragement, or simply sit with someone in their struggle, we are embodying grace in action.

At the Prayze Factor Awards this month, I was reminded of the power of purpose. Even though I didn’t bring home the trophy, the real reward was standing among others who are using their gifts to impact lives. It reminded me of why God originally called me to do Grit and Grace: to encourage healing, to magnify the name of Jesus, and to remind people that they are never too broken for God to use.

Recovery is not about perfection—it’s about direction. Step 12 calls us to live outwardly, to share the hope we’ve found, and to be vessels of God’s light in a world that often feels dark. For me, that means continuing to pour into this podcast and to tell the stories of transformation. I want to show that recovery is ongoing and to invite others into the process with faith and grace.

So as we close out this September, Recovery Month, I want to encourage you: find your way to live your version of Step 12. Whether it’s sharing your testimony, serving at a recovery group, or simply offering a kind word to someone in need, your service matters.

At sunset, a woman finds peace in the park as she pens her prayers and thoughts on gratitude and spiritual growth.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the free gift of eternal life and salvation found only in Your name. Thank You for my sobriety and the gift of recovery. Thank You for spiritual awakenings. Thank You for giving me a new heart. Help me to walk in Your service faithfully—to carry Your message of hope, healing, and freedom to others through this podcast and this blog, and through my life. Use my story and stories of others, my words, and my life as a testament to Your grace. Give me courage and motivation to serve, humility and patience to listen, and love to shine light where it is most needed, which is in You. Amen.
