Introduction

In our latest Grit and Grace Podcast episode, titled "The Caged Free Christian House Church", I sat with Glenn Newman—veteran Christian leader, co‑founder of Covenant Life Fellowship, and author of Pastors Let My People Go. Glenn shared how after decades in institutional ministry, he embraced the organic ecclesia Jesus walked with—small, relational gatherings of believers.

From Structure to Spiritual Family

Glenn’s journey highlights a radical pivot from formal church structures to Biblical community:

“Ecclesia is just a gathering of saints… very much different from the word church. The word church is an organization” (13:17:06–13:17:55).

He discovered that the early church met in homes without hierarchy, titles, or corporate frameworks—helping believers live as disciples, not spectators.

Participation, Not Performance

Contrasting résumé-driven leadership, Glenn pointed out:

“In a house church environment everybody has their opportunities to use their gifts” (13:35:54–13:36:13).

Between small group input, shared meals, worship, and mutual teaching, everyone grows spiritually—no single person sits on the stage while others remain passive.

Real Discipleship, Not Sundays Alone

Emphasizing relational growth:

“Jesus didn’t say… make new converts. He said… make disciples” (13:36:08–13:36:13).“If you depend on just the pastor to do all the discipling… there’s no way” (13:46:47–13:47:06).

This model nurtures maturity through time together—beyond planned sermons—and it unleashes each person’s unique gifting in meaningful ways.

Money, Ministry & Mission

Glenn challenged the status quo on church finances:

“75 or 85% goes to salaries… mortgages… whereas benevolence is less than 5%” (13:28:24–13:30:41).

His example traces back to Paul, who worked for his living and poured offerings into the needy (13:33:08–13:32:47). In ecclesia, generosity fuels outreach, not overhead.

Discipleship as Daily Practice

Describing discipleship like parenting:

“When your son is two… basic things… when he becomes a man… responsibility” (13:43:04–13:43:25).

Spiritual mentoring unfolds naturally—through intentional weekly rhythms, shared meals, Scripture reflection, and honest encouragement.

What Could Ecclesia Look Like for You?

Key Element

Example

Meeting Space

Home, café, park, library—wherever believers can gather.

Participation

Singing, discussing, questioning, ministering—everyone contributes.

Structure

Minimal programming, simple worship, Scripture sharing.

Generosity

Pooling resources for practical care, not buildings.

Discipleship

Investing time monthly in conversation, prayer, life challenges.

Why This Matters

If you’ve ever felt your spiritual life plateau in structured Sunday services, ecclesia offers a freedom rooted in the early church. It invites:

  • Personal connection over programmed fellowship

  • Mutual equipping over passive listening

  • Scripture-centered interaction over hierarchical teaching

  • Kingdom impact over salary-driven ministry

Final Thoughts

Glenn’s vision offers a return to nourishing community and real discipleship. It’s church where Jesus truly leads, believers belong, and everyone contributes.
