Praise, Worship & Music: Praise for Spiritual Battle Posted by Tonya Bruton | Grit and Grace Podcast with Tonya Bruton

If you caught this week’s episode of the Grit and Grace Podcast with Tonya Bruton, and my guest Benjamin Bruton, then you know we took a deep dive into praise, worship, and music. Not just as part of church, but as part of daily survival, healing, and walking with God when life is heavy.

I’ve learned over the years that worship is warfare. And music? It’s medicine.

There are days I don’t have the words to pray. Days when my thoughts are spinning, my body’s tired, or my emotions are all over the place. Singing a worship song can reset everything. It shifts the focus back to who God is, even when I’m unsure about everything else.

🎶 Worship Is More Than a Sunday Morning Thing

Worship doesn’t start and stop with a church service. It’s something I’ve had to lean on in hospital waiting rooms, in courtrooms, while folding laundry, or fighting through anxiety. It’s not about being in the “right mood”—it’s about making the choice to turn your attention back to God, even when everything around you is trying to distract you. So WILL I...

For me, it’s been:

  • “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” – because I need that reminder that I’m never carrying it all alone.

  • “Do It Again” by Elevation Worship – when I need to remember His track record in my life.

  • “Wait on You” by Maverick City Music – when I’m trying not to rush ahead of God.

  • “So Will I” – when I want to align myself with creation and just say, “Yes, Lord.”

These songs don’t fix everything, but they help ground me in the truth of who He is.

💡 Why Music Helps Us Hold On

Music reaches places that words alone sometimes can’t. It’s not about sounding holy or having perfect theology—it’s about connection. Sometimes I play a song just to get through the next few minutes. Sometimes I sit quietly and let the words minister to me. Sometimes I sing along, even if it’s through tears, because it reminds me I’m still standing—even in the middle of the mess.

It’s less about the performance and more about the posture of the heart.

🙌 Praising in the Pain

One of the most powerful things I’ve learned is how to praise through the pain. Not because I feel like it. Not because it’s easy. But because I believe in a God who works all things together for good (Romans 8:28)—even the hard stuff.

Praising God when life is good is one thing. Praising Him when everything’s falling apart? That’s faith. That’s relationship. And that’s where some of the most honest worship lives.

If that’s where you’re at today, I see you. I’ve been there. Keep playing the songs. Keep singing. Keep holding on.
